چکیده

Much attention has been paid to geographical variation in chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) behaviour, but few studies have applied quantitative techniques to explain this variation. Here, we apply methods typically used in macroecology to explain variation in the putative cultural traits of chimpanzees. We analysed published data containing 39 behavioural traits from nine chimpanzee communities. We used a canonical correspondence analysis to examine the relative importance of environmental characteristics and geography, which may be a proxy for inter-community gene flow and/or social transmission, for explaining geographical variation in chimpanzee behaviour. We found that environmental variables, especially rainfall seasonality explained a significant amount of behavioural variation, independent of geography. Several traits related to food acquisition/ processing were most related to environmental variables. Geography was a poor predictor of behavioural variability. These results support the idea that local ecological factors are important for explaining across-site variation in chimpanzee ‘culture’. In addition, inter-community dispersal and diffusion patterns have probably played a lesser role than local innovation and local spread in driving behavioural variation.

Characterizing genomic variation of Arabidopsis thaliana: the roles of geography and climate.

Arabidopsis thaliana inhabits diverse climates and exhibits varied phenology across its range. Although A. thaliana is an extremely well-studied model species, the relationship between geography, growing season climate and its genetic variation is poorly characterized. We used redundancy analysis (RDA) to quantify the association of genomic variation [214 051 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SN...

Book Review: "New Geographies of Language: Language Culture and Politics in Wales"

The book New Geographies of Language: Language, Culture and Politics in Wales is naturally seeking a very interesting goal rarely been witnessed before. For one thing, it is trying to mix language and linguistics with a totally distinct science, geography. For another, geography happens to be a literally exotic science. Students all around the world might be generally of two types: Those who lo...

Cultural differences in ant-dipping tool length between neighbouring chimpanzee communities at Kalinzu, Uganda

Cultural variation has been identified in a growing number of animal species ranging from primates to cetaceans. The principal method used to establish the presence of culture in wild populations is the method of exclusion. This method is problematic, since it cannot rule out the influence of genetics and ecology in geographically distant populations. A new approach to the study of culture comp...

The Landscape Design of Mountain Village in Western China During the Process of New-Type Urbanization

The unique geography and climatic condition determines the landscape environment characteristics of mountain village in western China. In recent years, with the fast development of the urban-rural integration and urbanization process, the traditional rural landscape is gradually transiting to the modern rural landscape. In the course of transformation, the natural patches and semi-natural patch...

The Number of Cultural Traits Is Correlated with Female Group Size but Not with Male Group Size in Chimpanzee Communities

What determines the number of cultural traits present in chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) communities is poorly understood. In humans, theoretical models suggest that the frequency of cultural traits can be predicted by population size. In chimpanzees, however, females seem to have a particularly important role as cultural carriers. Female chimpanzees use tools more frequently than males. They also...
